The contamination of U.S. drinking water with man-made “forever chemicals” is far worse than previously estimated with some of the highest levels found in Miami, Philadelphia and New Orleans, said a report on Wednesday by an environmental watchdog group.

“Forever” chemicals — synthetic industrial substances that build up in our bodies and are harmful to human health — are perfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS, and are used in numerous industrial processes and are woven into packaging, among other products that people come into direct contact with. The chemicals were found in just about every major U.S. city, with especially high levels in major metropolitan areas, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) said in a new report.
